Timeless Elegance: Jewellery in the age of Jane Austen

The early 19th century was a period of elegance and refinement, where jewellery was often a symbol of sentiment, nature, and quiet sophistication rather than pure extravagance. Coloured gemstones held a special place in the Regency heart. Amethyst was admired for its soft, romantic purple tones, while turquoise was believed to bring good fortune and protection. Diamonds were also worn, though typically in delicate settings rather than bold modern styles, and cameos carved with portraits or classical scenes were treasured as keepsakes.

Although Austen herself didn’t own a vast collection of jewellery, one particular piece has become famous: her turquoise cabochon ring set in 9ct gold. This modest but beautiful ring once almost left England when it was sold to American singer Kelly Clarkson for more than £150,000. Declared a national treasure, the UK government blocked its export, and the Jane Austen House Museum was able to purchase it. Today, it remains preserved in England - a tangible connection to one of literature’s great voices.
